Those we get to love forever

OUR PERMANENT “SANCTUARY” RESIDENTS

While Penny & Wild operates primarily as a rescue (with the goal of re-homing our rabbits & guinea pigs into loving indoor, forever homes) we sometimes encounter rabbits & guinea pigs that may not be suitable for adoptable or are unlikely to be adopted. This can be for various reasons:

  • They might be older; seniors are often overlooked due to their age or secondary health concerns.
  • They might need life-long medical management for a condition.
  • Or they might be “fospice” and only have a few more months to live.

We believe every rabbit & guinea pig deserves the change to live out their lives in comfort and happiness. Our Sanctuary Program provides loving, long-term or life-long foster homes where these rescues receives veterinary care and are cherished for as long as they are with us.

How YOU Can Help

Bentley & Talia

Bentley was surrendered to Penny & Wild (August 2022) when he was ten years old. His owners purchased him as a baby for their children to play with and he spent a decade locked in a hutch in their backyard. As their children got older and they lost interest they reached out to us. Bentley had advanced glaucoma in both eyes when he came to us. He was never taken to a vet until he came into our care. He now goes to an ophthalmologist every 3 months and gets daily eye drops to manage his condition. He also gets pain medication for arthritis twice a day and subq fluids to help his kidneys.
Talia was caught running loose on the side of the road by a good samaritan (October 2022). We later learned that she had been a stray and fed by the neighbors in that area for NINE YEARS without anybody stepping in to help get her safe. Talia was caught just weeks after a massive tropical storm blew through the area which caused severe flooding, drowning all of her babies and most of the other rabbits in the area.

Bentley & Talia are safe in a Sanctuary Foster Home with one of our long-time fosters. Their foster is committed to keeping them for the rest of their lives but she has multiple other fosters and 4 personal rabbits if her own. They would love a Sanctuary Foster Home of their own where they could get all of the attention and spend their retirement years getting spoiled.

Brody

Brody is another senior (est. to be 7) that was surrendered by his family to a shelter in his old age. Having never received the veterinary care he needed, Brody is deaf and has a permanent head tilt from untreated ear infections and is also almost completely blind. He was a poor candidate to be left in the shelter so we accepted Brody into Penny & Wild and one of our dedicated sanctuary fosters introduced him to 6 year old senior Amelia so that they could both have a friend till the end.

Safira

Safira was originally picked up by animal control when they seized a large group of rabbits from a property.  The property was filthy and the rabbits were living in the Florida heat, surrounded by feces, and fighting each other for scraps of food. Our rescue was one of several to respond and pull some of the rabbits from this case. Safira was one of the oldest rabbits from the group, leading us to believe that she was one of the original rabbits that they purchased. She had many litters of babies while living there and came to us with multiple wounds and abscesses from the fighting. After some time and TLC, Safira’s wounds healed and she started learning to trust people. A few months after we got Safira, we discovered that she has chronic kidney stones. She requires dietary modification, oral supplements, x-rays several times a year, daily pain medication, and additional supportive care as needed when she’s passing her stones. Kidney stones are a painful condition but we manage her pain as best we can and make sure that Safira continues to have a great quality of life. She is a 100% free roaming bunny and she loves her treats!

Fanta

Fanta was one of the animals we evacuated from a shelter on the west coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian (September 2022). Fanta is a Satin guinea pig and has developed “Satin Syndrome“. Fanta has bone lesions all over his body, severe calcium deficiency, and organ damage as a result. While there is no cure for Satin Syndrome, we are managing his symptoms as best as we can for the time he has left.
Fanta is on a calcium supplement and strong doses of pain medication in order to keep him walking and eating comfortably. He has a wonderful foster family where he’s spoiled and has all the toys and treats that he can desire!

Daisy & Mae

Daisy, and her daughter Mae, were surrendered to Penny & Wild in March 2024. They are both “Lethal White Guinea Pigs” which means that they were born with a number of birth defects and medical conditions as a result of their genes. Their previous owner was no longer to afford their care and reached out to us to help.
Daisy used to be able to see when she was younger but developed mature cataracts and is now blind. She relies heavily on the presence of Mae to help her feel secure and get around. Daisy receives daily eye drops to keep her eyes comfortable.
Mae was born with microphthalmia (meaning her eyes are too small) and also receives daily eye drops. Unlike her mother, she’s never been able to see and was born deaf. As well as missing half of her lower jaw! After years of getting her teeth trimmed every couple of months Mae had corrective surgery to remove 2 teeth once in our care. This made it much easier for her to eat.
These two girls are extremely sweet, and despite being deaf and blind, are happy in their sanctuary foster home.
